Are you like me? Do you have a Kpop obsession that most people in your life don’t know about? Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I tried to show someone a particular video after making this confession. It could be pretty hilarious if you play it the right way, and that’s why I think about it. Just in case.
Because honestly, I’m the kind of person that likes to come off as bizarre in my imagination. If one of my friends actually asked me one of these days to show them what I really like, I’d clearly point them to something like Epik High or Nell. However, how much FUNNIER would it be if I excitedly sat down and showed them…
THESE VIDEOS! I only have three for now, but I think it would be fun to occasionally do this. It’s fun because I don’t hate much of anything in the Kpop world.
Ivy – A-ha:
I don’t know how long ago I first saw this video, but it was enough to scare me away from it for a pretty long time. However, if you think about it, it’s one of the most mind-bendingly amusing MVs in Kpop-dom.
You start watching it. Ivy is decent looking, especially in that lovely dress she’s wearing at the beginning of the video. You’re like, “Oh, will this be a touching ballad?” But then as soon as you hear the scary Engrish, you start wondering what the heck is going on. “Just do it. Be a star….” A porn star? Or something close to it?
That’s all I can conclude from watching all of Ivy’s antics in the disturbingly breathy “A-ha” video. She bends every which way in her hideous white boots, and she really takes the cake when she dances in some guy’s martini glass.
But… the best is when the song comes to an end. Ivy blesses us with the most interesting of English voiceovers: “Now, I’m here… but, I’m not afraid anymore. Cause… I find myself. I find my way. Thank you, my Lord. Thank you.”
I can’t say I understand why she is thanking God that her slutty dancing got her fame. It does make for some serious funny though.
Super Junior – Twins:
Admittedly, “Twins” was one of the first Kpop songs I took a liking to, but that doesn’t make the video any less frightening.
First of all, we start of with a lot of fire. Around Hankyung’s face. Who has a bad hair cut. I don’t know how you feel, but fire is generally very scary. ESPECIALLY when it’s paired with some of the most demonic looking faces the Super Junior guys have probably made in all of their careers. I wish I had this video on my hard drive so I could capture every look for you, but I’m sure you can see for yourself.
The funniest for me is Heechul (who looks extraordinarily female in this video, by the way) sporting his beloved ssukeun miso (“rotten smile”) that kind of makes him look like he’s a victim of a stroke. What. the. heck. Pretty much every guy can match this level of oddity though, because they all look stricken by disease. Or constipation. One of those.
I don’t know what else to say. That’s enough right there to keep me worried. Maybe I’m just a wimp. Also, Donghae’s hair wants to burn my eyes out.
(I definitely say this one in good fun, because I think this video is bad…in a way that makes me feel very affectionate. If that makes sense?)
Dong Bang Shin Ki – Balloons:
If you don’t understand anything about Asian pop culture, “Balloons” can be a scarring sight. I say this from actual experience, because I saw this video before I knew anything about Kpop. And it left my jaw gaping. I mean, now that I’m fully into the culture of this genre, I want to smile my butt off at the cuteness that just pours out of this MV and eat it up with a spoon, but otherwise…
It’s a bunch of guys who are way too old to act as strange as they are. Why do they do this? Who will like this? They are dressed as animals, acting like morons. WHY? Why are there penguin dancers? The music is sickeningly sweet.
There are simply way too many questions you can ask.
(But dang, I adore “Balloons” now, and that is no lie.)
The irony in my singling cheesy videos like these out is that this is the kind of thing I first fell in love with when I started getting into Kpop. But now I feel like it’s more like campy goodness than anything else. What do you think?
