Merriment ‘Through the Rough’ review and lyrics

Mar 11, 2012 by     3 Comments    Posted under: English-language, music, review, United States

Hey everyone! I thought I’d offer up a quick music review. Unlike most of my music featured on this site, this group is English-speaking.

Merriment is made up of Christine and Collin Dupree, musicians in their own right but clearly linked to the group Eisley. Eisley is family-based group (three sisters, a brother, and a cousin) that started making way in 2003 with songs like “Marvelous Things” (when I first heard of them) and has most recently released the album “The Valley.” Merriment consists of the youngest two siblings that aren’t in the group, but due to some fantastic genetics has extremely similar/complimentary talent. Fans of Eisley know that the two vocalists, Sherri and Stacy, have unique voices that are incredibly close in sound but have their own subtle differences. Christine falls into the same category, with such a familiar voice that it’s no huge leap to enjoy it immediately. To put it shortly, it’s the voice of a beautiful angel (LOL). The music could be described as “acoustic” and very singer/songwriterish. It’s not going to blow anyone out of the water, but in this case I feel that it’s a requirement for it to be humble in scale and scope; essentially, it works.

I don’t know if it’s intended as a final style or just a beginning (after all, it’s an EP that doesn’t have a physical release outside of concerts), but either way it is really worth listening to especially if you already enjoy Eisley. Even if you don’t, this group has its own style and quality, so it might be unfair to talk about the groups in such close connection. However, since there is so much similarity in basic elements (such as voice and even the narrative lyric style), I think at this point it’s important to mention. With this comparison, however, it’s important to underline that Merriment is definitely its own thing and I am looking forward to seeing how it develops in the next few years. My favorite song at this point is “I Give Up,” but that could easily shift soon because every song is so heartfelt and lovely.

Since the EP is still so small and I suspect it’s just the start to a longer career, there isn’t a lot of media out there for it or even real promotions. There are no lyrics out yet and I am one of those people who can’t handle that so I have been transcribing the lyrics for “Through the Rough” as much as possible. Hopefully this can be a resource for some people, although I don’t guarantee complete accuracy. There were a few lines I couldn’t figure out so let me know if you have the right words and I’ll fix the problem areas.

I Give Up

I can’t sit here for another half-second
if my heart insists for beating for you
and your mind is a million miles away
and you can’t even bring yourself to say
that you don’t need me
though you think about me
It’s been two years now
You still don’t love me
but someday you might
Someday, yeah right

Well, oh, I give up
Oh, and so what
Oh, I give up
Oh, oh

I can’t trust you with something so important as my heart
when it’s not a fair game that we’re playing
You know it cause you can’t even bring yourself to say
That you don’t need me
though you think about me
It’s been two years now
You still don’t love me
But someday you might
Well someday, yeah right

Oh, and so what
Oh, I give up
Oh, I give up yeah
Oh
Oh, I give up on you, on you, on you, on you
Oh, I give up
Oh, and so what
Oh, I give up
Oh, oh
Oh, I give up

Blessed Soul

Indeed I am a blessed soul
I’m captive in this human role
I wear inside my ribcage in a heart so fine I’ll let you in, let you in

Knock once more upon the door
The wood is dense but this makes sense
There beneath the walls I love the chorus that goes from above, from above

And if you choose to let me love you
Our love, our love would reach the sky
No bounds, no bones, no breaks, no trials
Just you, just me
Our love goes free

Of course I know the sanctioned tricks
that taught me how your heart does tick
Blinded by this revelation
I knew I’d know you until the end, until the end

Just knock once more upon the door
The wood is dense but this makes sense
There beneath the walls I love the chorus that goes from above, from above

And if you choose to let me love you
Our love, our love would reach the sky
No bounds, no bones, no breaks, no trials
Just you, just me
Our love goes free

If you choose to let me love you
Our love, our love would reach the sky
No bounds, no bones, no breaks, no trials
Just you, just me
Our love goes free

If you choose stay a little while
If you choose to let me love you
Our love, our love would reach the sky
No bounds, no bones, no breaks, no trials
Just you, just me
Our love goes free
Just you, just me
Our love goes free

Through the Rough

Maybe in a day or so
I’ll be alright, yeah I’ll be feeling fine
And maybe if I let you go
I’ll be alright, yeah I’ll be alright

But it’s times like these that make the difference
when it’s not what you need
And it’s people like you, people like you
that pull me through, you pull me through

Well it takes you through the wrong times
And it brings you through the bad
And it’s fine if you don’t want to be mad
But at least it meant that you’ll be sad

When I said goodbye to you
I promise I’d stay gone, oh I’ll stay gone
But this has been so hard to do
But I’ll be alright, yeah I will survive

But it’s songs like these that make a difference
when you’re falling to your knees
And it’s people like you, and people like you
But they don’t know you like I do, whoa

Well it takes you through the wrong times
And it brings you through the bad
Well it’s fine if you don’t want to stay mad
But it least it meant that you’ll be sad

So wait for a minute
Just hold on to, hold on to
My heart and you’ll find out
You’re all I need, you’re all I need

Well it takes you through the wrong times
And it brings you through the bad
Well it’s fine if you don’t want to be mad
But at least it meant that you’ll be sad

Well you take me through the wrong times
And you get me through the bad
Well it’s fine if you don’t want to stay mad
But at [I'll be you'll be?] sad
But at least it meant that you’ll be sad

Rewind

I was so hard/hot(???)
But you couldn’t see me in the dark
It won’t take long
to figure out my heart

But we will try and move forward together
So let’s rewind, take our time
Let’s rewind, take our time

Cause it takes more than luck to find a love like that
It takes one breath and fire’s in my heart
It takes more than luck to find a love like that
It takes one breath and fire’s in my heart

He says he’s right
But you couldn’t see him in the light
It’s such a shame
to always take the blame

But we will try and move forward together
So let’s rewind, take our time
Let’s rewind, take our time

Cause it takes more than luck to find a love like that
It takes one breath and fire’s in my heart
It takes more than luck to find a love like that
It takes one breath and fire’s in my heart

So tell me watch out for the fire if it burns out
Tell me watch out for the fire if it burns out

It takes more than luck to find a love like that
It takes one breath and fire’s in my heart
It takes more than luck to find a love like that
It takes one breath and fire’s in my heart
Oh, oh, oh, oh

Sunday Morning

Well it’s Monday night and you’re the only one I’ve seen since Sunday morning,
since Sunday morning
We may not get this right but you’re the only I need to take this warning,
take this warning

Cause you and I
We used to be good friends
We know each other so well

And we stayed up all night
Just talking through our future plans and what we wanted
And what we needed
And as much as I’ve tried I can’t seem to make it through without you near me,
without you near me

Cause you and I
We used to be good friends
We know each other so well

Now we’ve learned that we don’t have to tell each other anything anymore
Cause you and I
We used to be good friends
We know each other so well

You and I
We used to be good friends
We know each other so well

So now I’ve learned not to trust you
Cause now I know love’s not foolproof

  • The only thing I could suggest is to listen to the songs while reading the lyrics. :) I found just a few small things. :)

  • In through the rough song it’s:

Well it takes you through the wrong times
And it brings you through the bad
Well it’s fine if you don’t want to stay mine
But it least admit that you’ll be sad

  • And in Rewind:

I was so wrong, but you couldn’t see me in the dark
